Issues for CSM meeting 8

Council of Stellar Management, Eve Online

It is meeting time again and for an experiment I thought I would open the floor to my loyal readers (apparently not everyone braves the eve-online forums ;))

So far I have the following issues on my radar (links in that post, which might change once I get them on the wiki).

Improve POS missile batteries
Allow reactivation of mods accidentally deactivated
Eve font changes – Progress requested
Sound issues
Issue when Copying and pasting links in Chat

I haven’t forgotten about the removal of Local chat in 0.0! However I’ve decided to pitch it as “Suggested replacements for local chat Intel” to allow me to include all the good ideas people have suggested and leave it to CCP to decide on which are the best fit. I’ll hopefully have it ready for meeting 9 (and in doing so will probably nuke any chances of me getting in for CSM5, we’ll see ;))

So now it is your turn. What issues currently in the assembly hall should I be bookmarking to watch? Keep in mind that I probably have enough issues for this meeting, but if anything important is lurking there then I can change my list before Sat.

Otherwise I will continue to wade through the Assembly Hall a few times a week and attempt to select the most interesting proposals to include next time.

I know that the job of CSM is to provide a constant flow of new ideas to CCP, but I strongly suggest that you guys focus on the treaty system. A previous CSM managed to get the skill queue, witch was one of the greatest feature ever implemented in this game, what else do they did? Nobody knows! If you guys manage to get a single feature so revolutionary as the treaty system in the next expansion all your mandate will be justified, you guys will be responsible to drive a lot of people into null sec to help develop all that new planets, increase the small gang PVP that will help mineral market, reduce over crowding of hisec, and have your made associated to a major achievement.

The treaty system is something that the CSM are behind 100% 🙂
As you will have seen from the Iceland summit minutes, CCP offered to make the CSM a stakeholder and we will be doing what we can to prioritise this feature.

But whilst that is going on behind the scenes, we still need to keep a constant flow of issues from the Assembly hall to CCP 🙂

Hello Tea, since the elections I’ve been following the CSM more or less quietly and I’d like to thank you for your work so far.

But since you ask about issues to keep an eye on, there is one thing that is really starting to get on my and other peoples nerve, and that is the forum censoring and moderation, even in the Assembly Hall. With some serious issues being locked down sooner or later, one comes to question the viability of the eve-o forum as a free podium to pitch ideas to the CSM. How can you represent us if the communication flow is already being filtered by CCP? I am starting to think it is inevitable the CSM communications platform is moved somewhere outside of CCP’s reach, so it can work properly.
What is your view on this?

Firstly I draw a distinction between moderation and censorship. I remember the howls of complaint about CCP censorship on the mothership change thread. Claims that people were being censored when in reality the post count difference between the official forum and the eve-search copy was due to “Free Abather” type posts which were removed as spamming. I have no problem with CCP enforcing the forum rules that people agree to when posting there, however, if genuine posts are being deleted for no good reason I want to hear about it!

At the Iceland summit we spoke to the GMs about “silent” moderation (i.e. deleting posts) being perceived as censorship and suggested that rather than delete posts which are against forum rules that the post be edited to contain something like “This post was removed due to forum rule violation”. The issue was that players could simply edit the moderated post to replace the original text…

The CSM process for raising issues has to remain in the assembly hall, however we have evemail, blogs (such as this) and twitter amongst other methods of contact. If an issue is removed from the assembly hall for no good reason then one of the CSMs can put it back (assuming we are made aware of it).

If you have a specific example I would love to see it so I can hassle the powers that be.

I’m not talking about the spam type posts like in the case of the mothership changes. I’m talking about the problem that arises when players feel there is an issue with a subject that is per se taboo, like staff actions, and are trying to discuss and pitch the issue to CSM, but get shut down, even though it is a meta-discussion.

I often get the impression moderation is trying hard to find reasons to lock a thread. I’m active in quite a number of forums and ran some myself in the past, and while eve-o is not the one with the strictest moderation, it wins the award for most unnecessary locks. Again, when someone starts a discussion about forum rules or even with ideas to make the forum nicer but that somehow touches on the subject of moderation, it gets shut down. And then we have the stupid rules like no reference to other games…

We all know there are things about CCPs support and staff actions that are less than stellar and thus are subjects that should be allowed to be discussed in the Assembly Hall.

I know the CSM is battling to get more say into things that are outside of the actual game and that is good. CCP is contradictory in a way, they
promote the (liberal) out of game aspects of eve, the CSM and even stuff like meta-gaming as features, yet they seem to be uncomfortable with players making use of their liberty. But that is a process I guess.

I’ve now seen the thread in the Assembly hall which was locked and I will flag up to the CSM liaison that proposals touching on moderation are currently impossible without sidestepping the proper process.

In my opinion proposals about moderation in general should be allowed but discussion about a specific thread being locked shouldn’t be.
